Valentine's Day and Capitalism

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and for many, (whether you have a special someone to celebrate it with or not) it can cause a great deal of stress about money. What do you think of when you think of a perfect Valentine's Day date? A fancy restaurant with a steak dinner and wine and roses? While those things are nice, a date like that can rack up a couple hundred dollars pretty easily. Valentine's Day has always been a capitalistic holiday; so many stores lure you in with special heart candies and treats and cards and it has become the norm to spend lots of money on your significant other.  Whether you don't have that sort of money, or you don't even have a significant other and would rather celebrate your friends in your life, there are other options!
San Francisco is a weird city, to put it simply. But it is also arguably one of the best cities to find new and exciting (and even cheap) things to do! Every Valentine's Day for the past few years, there has been something called the Great San Francisco Pillow Fight. Very little information can be found out online about it and information is spread mostly by word of mouth throughout the city. What it is, is on Valentine's Day, you show up to the Embarcadero Plaza (right outside of the ferry building by the water), and at exactly 6:00 PM, there is a mass pillow fight. Sometimes there are people around the area selling pillows for only $5 but you can also bring one from home if you want. You could even go to a thrift store and find pillows for cheaper than that just to use at the pillow fight. This is such a great option for groups of friends or couples because of how creative it is. This is not something that just anyone can do anywhere and it is such a good memory. Not to mention it is a lot of fun.
To learn more about this event you kind of just have to ask around. Locals in the city will for the most part have at least heard about it, and if you get lucky you'll find someone who has been to it before and can tell you all about it. There a couple things you have to remember going into this event though: because of how secretive it is and unsupervised, there is a chance that there could be no pillow fight at all, but if enough people show up, there is a higher chance there will be one. Also, remember to be safe and courteous at all times! If someone doesn't have a pillow, don't hit them! And as always, clean up after yourself afterwards. Events like this are everywhere, sometimes you just have to dig for them a little bit! While the facebook page for the Great San Francisco Pillow Fight has been inactive for a while, the video below is from the pillow fight last year!
