Home Spa

College students are more than deserving of a little TLC now and then and it is so important to take time for yourself. Whether work was a little tougher than usual, you have three tests in one week, or that one difficult class was just a lot harder than normal, slowing down has so many mental and physical health benefits. One of my favorite things to do to help myself relax and unwind is go to the spa. More often than not though, spending that kind of money is out of the question. So I wanted to write down a couple of DIY home spa remedies that are so cheap (and probably already on hand) you could make this a weekly thing.

Image result for oatmeal bath"First thing's first: a bath. But instead of just a plain old bath, grab an old sock and a box of plain oats for a soothing oatmeal bath. Take your sock and fill it with one cup of plain rolled oats. Sometimes if I have loose leaf tea on hand I'll throw some of that in there too. Then tie the sock up tightly at the top and throw it into the bath under running water. After filling the tub squeeze the water from the sock a few times to make sure the oats have really soaked in. This is so great for dry skin or when you need to get rid of a sunburn!

Now while you're taking a bath obviously you need a face mask to go with it. One of the quickest and easiest face masks is a banana and avocado face mask. For this "recipe" you can always make substitutes for what you have on hand which is so great.

  • 1 mashed banana
  • 1/2 mashed avocado
  • 1 tbsp. honey
optional:
  • 1/3 cup yogurt
  • A few drops of vitamin E oil
Once all the ingredients are mixed, apply to your face and leave on for 10-20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. One of my favorite vitamin E oils comes from Trader Joe's because it has a mix of coconut oil with the vitamin E to make it a little less thick and sticky.

One of my absolute favorite smells is fresh ground coffee. So making a coffee body scrub just makes sense. You only need 2-4 ingredients to whip this up:

  • 1/2 cup coffee grounds
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (can use more coffee grounds instead of mixing with brown sugar)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • A few drops of essential oils (optional, but I recommend vanilla, cedarwood, or rose)
Mix it all together and it can be stored in a jar for a few days to use again!

Being a student is hard work. Take care of yourself while having fun with it! Experiment with things you already have laying around your house. You'd be surprised how many uses you can find for different ingredients you already have!
